A series of terms you'll often encounter when reading about or understanding card games.

  • Control:In games played in rounds, refers to the player who wins the ability to lead (start) the next round.
  • Hand:"Hand" can have two meanings. The first refers to the set of cards possessed by a player The cards may be held in the player's hand, or lying on the table. The second definition means a trick (see below).
  • Impure sequence:A set of 3 or more cards in continuous order, such as 2 3 4 . The cards may be of any suit.
  • Pair:2 cards of the same number
  • Pure sequence:A set of 3 or more cards of the same suit in continuous order, such as 7

  • Quartet:4 cards of the same number
  • Round:One stage of play. A round typically involves each player playing once, although in some games, a round may involve players playing multiple times.
  • Trick:The set of cards played during a round. The term "trick" is generally used in games where players are required to play a single card on their turn; a trick therefore contains as many cards as their are players. Tricks are generally won by a player.
